Now you have a snapshot of what WIL means and why it matters. Next, let’s break down what exactly these courses are so you know the nuts & bolts.
At its core, WIL refers to a structured learning experience fixed into an academic programme where the student’s learning is linked to real-world activities, professional environments or industry-partnered tasks. It is often regarded as an umbrella term for a range of approaches and strategies. It integrates theory with the practice of work within a well-structured course curriculum.
For Australian universities, WIL activities may include professional workplace placements like internships, clinical placements, fieldwork, and practicums. They can be local, interstate or international and may include online or virtual WIL. Since it is embedded within the curriculum, WIL units are academic units where you gain credit by doing an industry placement.
Choosing a WIL-embedded degree means you will not only be studying theory but also actively engaging with work. Thus, you gain confidence, contacts and practical exposure even before completing your degree. That makes your profile stronger when you graduate.
Now that we understand what WIL is and why it matters, let’s move on to the exciting perks of pursuing this course.
If you are wondering what’s in it for you, well, the benefits are many, and we have highlighted some of the best ones.
In essence, Work-Integrated Learning in Australia isn’t just an academic perk; it’s a career catalyst. It’s where education becomes an experience, and that experience becomes opportunity.
Now, let’s zoom in on specific types of courses that are particularly strong with WIL components. It is important to note that not all degrees are created equal; some disciplines lend themselves more naturally to WIL, and some Universities design programs around WIL strategically.
Here are some of the fields you should consider:
When you evaluate a WIL course, look for the following factors: a defined placement period, academic credit for work activity, industry partners listed, evidence of graduate employment outcomes, and support systems for international students. This will help you pick the most suitable option to study in Australia.
Choosing where to study is like picking a start for your dream career, and in Australia, the options are truly stellar. From universities with decades of global reputation to innovative institutions redefining hands-on learning, Australia’s higher education system blends academic brilliance with real-world industry experience. Some of the top ones include:
These universities in Australia emphasise WIL across various disciplines and connect knowledge with action. Every placement, project, and partnership is carefully designed to ensure students walk out with a degree and a portfolio of professional achievements. Up next, let’s have a look at the financial considerations of such courses in Australia.
Tuition fees are a key part of planning your study abroad budget. WIL courses may not necessarily cost more than regular courses, but the university ranking matters. Let’s talk numbers and what you should expect in terms of the cost.
| Course Level | Average Cost for International Students |
| Bachelor’s Degree | AUD 28,000 to AUD 45,000 per year |
| Master’s Degree | AUD 30,000 to AUD 50,000 per year |
For more definite figures, check the official website of your selected University. Also, check for scholarships or financial assistance, as many Australian Universities offer WIL-related or international student scholarships.
A WIL-embedded programme is an investment, and you could see a strong return in employability and salary. But for that, you will first have to qualify for admission. The subsequent section will help you further.
Australian Universities often look for students who are curious, adaptable, and eager to learn beyond the classroom. From academic qualifications and English proficiency to WIL-specific prerequisites, every requirement is designed to ensure you are prepared to balance both study and work seamlessly. So, before you apply, here’s what you need to tick off your admission checklist.
| Criteria | Master’s Degree | Bachelor’s Degree |
| Academic Qualification | A recognised Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with an acceptable GPA/grade. Some programmes prefer relevant background or work experience. | Successful completion of high school or equivalent, often with acceptable grades in the required subject stream (depending on major). |
| English Language Proficiency Test Score | Universities require IELTS (Academic), TOEFL or equivalent. E.g., IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is common. | IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 (varies by University/discipline) is common; some may require higher for WIL units. |
| WIL-Specific Criteria | Career readiness interview, willingness to undertake placement/industry project, might need to meet criteria for work placements (e.g., police check, working with children, health clearance) | Some WIL units may require an application/selection process, and may need to meet the host organisation criteria |
Meeting these requirements is about eligibility and readiness. So, if you’ve got determination, enthusiasm, and a willingness to dive into the world of work-integrated learning, you are already halfway there.
With all the details in place, are you excited to apply? The Australian University application process is clear, structured, and student-friendly, designed to help international aspirants understand their way confidently from dream to destination.
Whether you are planning for a Bachelor’s or a Master’s program, understanding each step ensures your journey is smooth, timely, and free of surprises. So, let’s walk through the application process for international students.
Once you have the CoE, you can apply for the Subclass 500 student visa and prepare your departure.
An important part of WIL is that you are not just doing coursework, you are also engaging with industry, real work settings, projects or placements. Here are common activities and how they help you sync with the industry:
These activities mean that your course is deeply tied to industry, and that helps you hit the ground running when you graduate.
Alright, you have just graduated, and instead of wondering what’s next, you are already walking into a workplace that feels familiar because you have been there before. That’s the power of Work-Integrated Learning. It doesn’t just hand you a degree; it hands you a career head start. In Australia, where industries thrive on innovation and collaboration, WIL graduates are in high demand, often landing roles faster, earning higher salaries, and stepping into jobs that truly match their skills and ambitions.
Let’s explore where your degree could take you next.
| Course | In-demand Job Roles | Average Annual Salary |
| Engineering |
| AUD 71,500 (Median early-career salary for Engineering graduates) |
| Information Technology (IT) |
| AUD 75,311 (For freshers) |
| Business & Management |

Tip by KC’s Australia Experts: While choosing your WIL course, look at not just the salary numbers but also the employability indicators like percentage in full-time work, time taken to secure a job, and role relevance to your field. The duration varies depending on your course and University. Generally, placements can last anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months, while some professional degrees, like Engineering or Healthcare, may include year-long industry placements or co-op programs.
It depends on the industry and the structure of your course. Some placements are paid internships, especially in Business, IT, and Engineering, while others, like Teaching or Nursing practicums, may be unpaid but offer invaluable hands-on experience and academic credit.
No, you don’t. Your Australian student visa (Subclass 500) allows you to participate in work placements that are part of your course. However, the placement must be approved by your university and should comply with your visa’s work limitations if it extends beyond your course requirements.
Universities in Australia provide career counselling, placement matching, resume workshops, and mentorship programs to help students with the WIL process. Dedicated WIL coordinators ensure students get placements that align with their academic and career goals.
Some of the top industries offering structured WIL experiences include Information Technology, Business & Finance, Engineering, Healthcare, Education, and Environmental Sciences. These sectors often collaborate closely with Universities through industry advisory boards.
In some cases, yes. Certain universities offer global WIL programs that let you complete internships with approved companies in other countries. However, you will need approval from your University’s WIL office to ensure it meets course credit requirements.

Hello everyone!
My name is Sameer Gimonkar, and I am excited to share with you my incredible journey towards achieving my academic goals.
The road to fulfilling my passion for engineering was quite challenging. Like many of you, I wanted to excel in my chosen field and sought the best possible opportunities to turn my dreams into reality. Having researched various universities and programs, I knew that I would require expert guidance to find the perfect destination for my academic growth. Moreover, I realised that the application process for studying abroad can also be overwhelming and filled with uncertainties.
That’s when I connected with several education consultants, but when I found KC Overseas Education, I knew I had found the gem among the rocks.
From the moment I stepped into their office, I was warmly welcomed by a team of dedicated professionals who understood my aspirations. Their personalised approach and attention to detail set KC Overseas Education apart from the rest. Unlike other consultants I had visited before, the KC team took time to understand my academic background, interests, and long-term goals.
Since I had a lot of doubts about pursuing my overseas education program, Team KC Overseas helped me through that. They provided me with enough knowledge regarding various countries and I have finally selected New Zealand because of the educational opportunities over there and long-term benefits. The team meticulously assisted me through the application process, ensuring that every document was in order, and every requirement was met promptly.
I applied for my Masters in Engineering Studies in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Auckland with the help of KC Overseas Education.
So, when I applied to the University of Auckland my application was completely processed by the team of New Zealand. To my surprise, I received the offer letter from the university within a week and the student visa within a month. In the initial 15 days, I received my AIP and in the next 15 days, my student visa.
KC Overseas provided me with proper assistance to pursue my overseas education, and I am very thankful to their team.
I highly recommend KC Overseas to all the students who want to pursue their higher education overseas.
Wishing you all the adventures in the world of higher education and beyond!

The Australian Government provides an opportunity to pursue higher education in their country to the international students but as a prerequisite, the aspirants are required to obtain an Australian Student Visa to be eligible to study in Australia.
Earlier the procedure to obtain an Australian Student Visa was quite time-taking but now with the onset of the global pandemic, the Australian Government has announced few changes in the Australia Student Visa process to make it quick. In this article, we are going to discuss about the recent changes in the Australian Student Visa procedure.
During the unprecedented times, the Australian government has made some major changes in the visa process, as listed below:
The Australian Government has been granting student visas in all locations lodged outside Australia, provided the student must meet all the eligibility requirements. In this way, when the Australian borders will re-open, international students will already have visas and they will be able to travel to Australia without any hassles.
Students who are presently enrolled and pursuing a degree from an Australian university online at their home country, will be able to utilize this study period to be counted towards the Australian study requirement for up to four years of post-study work visa, provided they commence their studies after securing their visas. Thus, the entire duration of online studies will be counted towards eligibility to apply for post-study work visa, subclass 485.
To fulfil the Australia Study Visa Requirements, applicants are required to provide an English Language Proficiency test Certificate and undergo health check-ups. But in case, this step is getting delayed due to the pandemic, the applicants will be allotted additional time to submit these documents/evidence.
International students will be able to lodge a further student visa free of cost if they are unable to finish the degree course within the original visa validity due to the Covid-19. So, now you are all informed about the recent changes in the procedure of student visa to study in Australia for international students. Let us now check out for the Australian Student Visa Application Process.
Now that you are aware about the visa updates, here is how you can apply for Australian Student Visa for your higher education abroad:
Step 1: Visit the official Australian Government Website https://rb.gy/1fthdq and fill in the required details.
Step 2: Create an ImmiAccount on the website, fill in the application form and attach the required documents.
Step 3: Recheck the details and ensure that it is correct. Now, pay the Australian student visa cost of AUD$ 620.
Step 4: Download an 8-digit referral ID after visa is lodged, which is required for a medical check-up. Once this is done from a physician empanelled with the Australian High Commission, wait for the visa outcome.
Ideally, one should apply for an Australian Student Visa at least 1-1.5 months in advance to the date of commencement of the course. But keeping in mind the present circumstances, we would recommend taking professional assistance and guidance on the same. We hope that this information was helpful to you and if you still have any queries relating to an Australian Visa Process Post-Covid for your higher education abroad, do visit us in person or book a free online counselling session from the safety and comfort of your home. Our experts will resolve all your doubts. Until then, happy planning!
